Good Debt Vs. Bad Debt

9th May 2009 by Credit No Comments

Having debt is not necessarily a bad thing. In order to build your credit score having debt maybe necessary; the question is and remains what is the difference and what do I have to look for when looking at my debt? When you pay your bills on a credit card or buy groceries on that credit card there is definitely a difference between that and going out to buy things like stereos and cars on the same credit card. Credit card companies look at the charges on your bill and are able to see how responsible you are based on your credit reports.

If you are trying to build credit the best way to do so is through this good credit. When you buy groceries and pay your bills you will look responsible with the money the credit card company is giving you. Ask yourself questions when you think about using your credit card for something that seems questionable. For example, if you make a $500 charge on your credit card, ask yourself, do I need this? What will this charge look like on my credit report to the creditors? Do I feel comfortable with this charge? By asking these questions you will weed out what the credit card companies are thinking about these charges.

Top 5 Tips for Maintaining your Credit Score

5th May 2009 by Credit No Comments

We all end up getting having it at some point in our lives; whether it be in the form of a credit card, student loans, or a mortgage, it is inevitable it is impossible to pay for everything in life right away (short of being a millionaire at least) Now that you have this credit the question is what do I do with it. If you have good credit, at least thus far here are some tips to maintaining it.

  • First thing first, check what your credit looks like. Order a credit report and look through it. Check for transactions that you are not aware of making and make sure you have all the information right. It is pertinent that all the information is correct on here.  Remember, this is your financial identity at stake.
  • Be predictable. Pay all your bills and payments on time.  Your persistence will show up on your credit score and it will make it easier in the future to get a loan and maintain your credit score.
  • Pay your outstanding debt and stay beneath your debt limit.  One way to do this is to make a monthly budget and stick to it.
  • Never file bankruptcy. This can stay on your record for up to 10 years. This will make it impossible to get a loan and therefore impossible to build your credit. Avoid this monster at all costs.
  • Last but not least, know your credit limit. If you have more than one credit card, add up the limits and know your goals for the month. If you close a credit card account make sure that you subtract that from your credit card limits.
