Credit Repair Scam

9th May 2009 by Credit No Comments

Negative information in your credit report can not legally be changed within seven years. The only things that can be changed are false information and items that are older than seven years, or ten due to bankruptcy.

Things to watch out for when choosing a credit repair company:

A company that doesn’t care about industry rules and regulations.

One that claims to remove bad credit history.

A company that does not inform you as to what you can do legally for free.

One that charges you before they have done anything to repair your credit.

A company that discourages you from contacting credit bureaus.

One that withholds written documentation of your contract.

Remember these are things that you don’t want your credit repair company to do.

If you have awful credit it is likely you are thinking about the best ways to fix it.  There are several things you have to take in to account before you try to fix your credit score. First thing, make sure you know your credit score and what your history is, then it becomes possible to try to fix it.  Check all your bases with your credit reports then try these five steps.

  • Check your credit reports. Know what you owe on your credit cards and how far behind you are. Once you know what kind of debt you are in you can start making a plan that will work for you. Do not try to make unreasonable plans to fix your credit situation. If you can pay it, do not plan to make it true.
  • Talk to your creditors. This may seem like a waste of time, but it’s not. If you establish the fact that you want to fix your credit they will be more than happy to help.  Even if they do not want to help, you have told them you want to try to move in the right direction.
  • Stop making charges. You already have enough debt, do not make it worse for yourself. If you can not afford it on your salary do not buy it.
  • As a result of number four, make sure that your paycheck is enough to live month to month. If you want to make more payments toward your debt, find a part time job to dedicate your earnings to making those payments.  But keep your head above water by making sure you are not getting further in debt.
  • After all this, it is time to seek help. Look for a program to help you through this. Debt relief programs are like alcohol anonymous for debtors. You’ll come out feeling hundreds times better and  having a better credit score.
